National Information Infrastructure Protection Services

Computer systems are the physical and virtual backbone of our information society for the 21st century. According to the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), critical infrastructures involve those services so vital that their incapacity or destruction would have a debilitating impact on the defense or economic security of the United States. Thus, because of their inherent nature, critical infrastructures are especially susceptible to a terrorist attack. At the heart of this infrastructure our government’s systems, regional banking institutions and utility companies’ reliance on computer technologies poses a serious threat to national security of the United States. If any were to experience a large-scale terrorist attack, the impact could be detrimental to the economic security of the United States.

A structured electronic attack targeting an agency or organization’s operations systems could cause widespread disruption to a given geographic region. Cyber-terrorist and foreign national intelligence organizations have already used structured cyber attacks on infrastructure elements around the world to achieve a variety of goals. There have been numerous, successful attacks against banks that have gone unreported in the press. An organization with sufficient resources or well-supported terrorist group could conduct a structured attack on a banking system without having to set foot in the United States, and with a large degree of anonymity.
